The Michener Award is Canada’s premier honour for public-service journalism, recognizing news organisations whose work achieved tangible public benefit, from policy reform to greater transparency and public awareness. Since 1971, winners have ranged from small local outlets to national media giants.

Fellowships:
Applications open December 17 for the Michener–Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Reporting and the Michener–L. Richard O’Hagan Fellowship for Journalism Education.
These fellowships support major projects that strengthen journalism in Canada, offering $40,000 plus up to $5,000 in expenses. The Deacon Fellowship funds in-depth public-interest investigations with the potential to create real public benefit, while the O’Hagan Fellowship supports innovative work that advances journalism teaching, training, or research.

Each year the Michener Award honours Canadian news organisations whose work embodies the highest standards of public service journalism — reporting that is fair, professional, and leads to meaningful change.
We’re writing to invite [Your Outlet/Team] to submit eligible work published or broadcast in 2025. Submissions open Dec 17 and will remain open until February 20.

The Michener Fellowships are now open for applications. The Michener Awards Foundation supports ambitious journalists and journalism educators who want to take on projects that serve the public interest or enhance journalism training in Canada.
Fellowship options:
➡️Michener–Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Reporting: For experienced journalists planning in-depth investigations that could lead to concrete improvements in policy, governance or public life.
➡️Michener–L. Richard O’Hagan Fellowship for Journalism Education: For media organizations, journalism schools or teams including experienced journalists + educators developing educational resources, training innovations or research projects to strengthen journalism practice.
