Speech by His Excellency the
Right Honourable Edward Schreyer, on the occasion of the presentation of the
1978 Michener Awards for Journalism.
Rideau Hall, November 3, 1979.
I am pleased to welcome you to Rideau Hall this evening. You often
come here to observe ceremonies and receptions for the benefit of
your readers, listeners, and your television viewers. It is good
that you should have your chance to be the guests of honour. For
once we will all be able to eat in peace.
To the winner of the Michener Award, I say congratulations. You have
earned our respect and that of your colleagues. The media - written
or electronic alike - plays an important role in the history of a
society and you must ensure that it remains free and vibrant. Such a
press is a democracy's strongest asset.
Once again, I extend my warmest congratulations to the winner. Have
a great evening!
Thank you - Merci.
His Excellency the Right Honourable Edward Schreyer
Governor General of Canada
