Shirley Stocker, executive producer of CKNW’s public affairs programming, accepts the 1994 Michener Award from Governor General Roméo LeBlanc. The work of the radio station was recognized during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, Ottawa on May 12, 1995.
Radio station CKNW/98, New Westminster, won the award for its powerful coverage of the issues surrounding a British Columbia power project and its perceived threat to salmon stocks and the environment.
The presentation marked the 25th year of the Michener Award since its inception in 1970
The Michener Award is unique because its criteria do not require judges to take account of journalistic skills. Instead, they must consider each entry on its merit, its freedom from any thought of gaining some personal or corporate advantage, and its service to society.
