Reporter Tom Barrett, representing the Edmonton Journal, accepts the 1992 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism from His Excellency, Raymon Hnatyshyn, Governor General of Canada. The award was presented at a ceremony held at Government House in Ottawa, May 4, 1993.
The newspaper won the award for a series of stories on the judicial system and the serious flaws that exist in the reliance on professional psychiatric assessments in the determination of innocence or guilt.
The Michener Award is unique because of its emphasis on the impact of the journalism for the public good, plus recognition of the resources available to the entrant in an effort to put smaller and larger organization on a more equal footing.
