The Globe and Mail - Finalist for the 2008 Michener Award

Photo by Sgt Serge Gouin - Office of the Secretary to the Governor General

(L-R): John Stackhouse, Editor-in-Chief, The Globe and Mail; Her Excellency, Governor General Michaëlle Jean; His Excellency, Jean-Daniel Lafond; reporter Grant Robertson. The photo was taken following the Michener Award ceremony held at Rideau Hall on June 10, 2009.

The Globe and Mail received a Citation of Merit for a six-month investigation into Canada’s outdated 911 system for handling telephone emergency calls. After the investigation, the federal government ordered a nation-wide update of the country’s emergency phone system, including technology to locate 911 calls from cell phones.

Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener's successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
