Reporter Sue Bailey accepts the 2001 Michener Citation of Merit from Governor General Adrienne Clarkson on behalf of The Canadian Press.
The news organization was recognized for an investigation into the deteriorating conditions in women’s prisons. After the series ran in newspapers across the country, advocacy groups launched a human rights challenge, protesting the conditions of women in security.
The Citation of Merit was presented at the annual Michener Foundation award ceremony held at Rideau Hall on April 30th, 2002.
Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener’s successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
