Greg Urbanoski, representing The Daily Herald, accepts a Citation of Merit from Governor General Roméo LeBlanc on behalf of the newspaper.
The Prince Albert daily received the award for a tenacious enquiry into spending practices by municipal politicians and officials. It generated the principal issue of the Prince Albert 1994 municipal elections and all but one of the incumbent city councillors seeking re-election, lost his job.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, May 12, 1995.
The first award covered the calendar year 1970. Since then, a rich variety of news organizations have had their names inscribed on Michener trophies – print and broadcast, large and small, French and English, East and West. The Michener was also the first national journalism award open to both broadcast and print media. The award goes to the news organization itself, rather than the individual journalists involved in the story.
