Murdoch Davis, editor-in-chief of the Edmonton Journal, accepts the 1993 Michener Citation of Merit from Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn on behalf of The Edmonton Journal.
The newspaper was honoured for its publication of more than 200 stories over a period of months on key issues affecting health in men and women from teen years through the sixties and another series, ranging over eight days, which examined the tough choices to be made in health care delivery in the wake of the Alberta government’s 25 percent cutbacks in funding.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall, May 9, 1994.
Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener’s successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
