The newspaper was honoured for a series informing its readers fully on the AIDS problem. A poll conducted by the Sun indicated that British Columbians were unclear about AIDS and all its ramifications. Four Sun reporters interviewed doctors, lab technicians, homosexuals, heterosexuals, teenagers, and health officials to get beyond the myth and the hysteria about the disease and give people accurate and easy-to-understand information.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rideau Hall on December 8th, 1988.
Each year, the Governor General has honoured Michener Award and Fellowship winners at a Government House ceremony. Each of Roland Michener’s successors has graciously adopted and maintained a personal interest in the Michener Awards Foundation and its commitment to Canadian journalism excellence.
