Roland Michener was appointed Governor General the same year that Canada celebrated 100 years of Confederation.
Rideau Hall is the official residence and workplace of every governor general since 1867. This national historic site, situated in an idyllic 79-acre urban oasis, is located only a few minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau.
Each year the incumbent Governor General honours Michener Award and Michener-Deacon Fellowship winners at a Rideau Hall ceremony.
When the board of the Michener Awards Foundation decided in 2000 to establish this website, it cast about for a distinctive logo as a graphic identification.
The badge borrows the strong blue and gold colours from the Michener coat of arms. The crossed quills represent print journalism and a lightning bolt for broadcast and other forms of electronic journalism.
